EURAXESS ASEAN held a webinar on 19 November. UKRO is organising a two-part webinar series for researchers who are interested in applying for the 2021 ERC Starting Grant call, which has a provisional submission deadline of 24 March 2021. The overall aim of this webinar series is to provide participants with detailed, practical information about the ERC Starting Grant scheme. ERC grants. Starting Grants, Consolidator Grants and Advanced Grants are the 3 core funding schemes, while the ERC Proof of Concept grant is a source of additional funding for ERC grant holders.

A total of 39 researchers submitted applications for this year’s ERC Starting Grants. Fifteen of these were approved, which equates to a success rate of 38.5%: a record high for ETH Zurich. Last year, 20% of the Starting Grant applications were successful. While the initial plan was to close the call on March 24th, it should be noted that the deadline for submission of applications has been extended until April 8th. Launched by a group of Swedish foundations, the call addresses prominent early-career researchers with host institutions in Sweden who in tough competition scored among the best (”A”) in the most recent European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant call — yet narrowly missed out on a grant due to the limit funding available. The ERC awards flexible, long-term funding for a period of 5-6 years.
