Since its launch in the 1990s, Oatly has Oatly, the Swedish oat milk brand whose popularity ushered in a new wave of vegan dairy alternatives, is facing a boycott by climate-minded fans and activists in light of a belated public Oatly has made headlines recently for accepting an investment from Blackstone, one of the largest private equity firms in the world, which has links to deforestation in the Amazon, the Trump administration and the commercialisation of the housing market. Oatly customers are vowing to take their business elsewhere after the company has been accused of ‘selling its soul’. It comes after the brand sold a £150million stake to a group led by a private Blackstone has been linked to deforestation in the Amazon. The company has flatly denied all allegations of such links, but a report published last year in The Intercept makes a convincing case against the firm.

Oatly, the Swedish oat milk brand whose popularity ushered in a new wave of vegan dairy alternatives, is facing a boycott by climate-minded fans and activists in light of a belated public Oatly is a food brand from Sweden that produces alternatives to dairy products from oats. A liter of Oatly product consumed in place of cow’s milk results in around 80% less greenhouse gas emissions, 79% less land usage and 60% less energy consumption. What was the Oatly scandal about? At the end of last year, Oatly (one of- if not the most- globally known brand of oat milk) suffered major backlash when it became exposed that one of their investors is Blackstone- a controversial private equity firm linked to Amazon deforestation and Trump’s 2020 campaign. Needless to say, both of these things are quite the opposite of what a lot of Oatly Late last week, climate activist Laura Young announced that she would be “moving [her] purchases elsewhere” having learnt of Blackstone’s contribution to Oatly’s funding round. Blackstone is “an investment company who part own companies who are responsible for Amazon deforestation,” she wrote in a Twitter post .
